Why do chromosomes coil during mitosis?

During metaphase of mitosis, chromatin strands condense, or 'coil,' into chromosomes. This new structure is compact and transportable, but cannot be transcribed. Once a cell divides, chromosomes uncoil back into chromatin and the transcription process resumes.
