I don't understand Sponge bob.?

Ok so my little brother is 6 and he's watching Sponge bob and I don't get it at all. I am 21 and I understand cartoons are totally overrated but this show has to be confusing little kids. Mermaid man looks nothing like a mermaid. And then there's a ******* squirrel that lives underwater. Come on now Don't you think they should be making it look more realistic I know kids have wild imaginations but geez. And I can garantee Sponge bob and Patrick are gay together our society odjects to the whole idea of being gay/ so why do they make it so obvious for young children. Don't get me wrong I'm not against being gay/. You know I could careless it's your life do what you want to be happy but for real don't corrupt the minds of children.
